Dans les années 50, les autorités roumaines annonçaient que la lèpre, cette «  punition divine », avait été éradiquée en Roumanie.

En réalité, à l'abri des regards, tous les lépreux furent exilés à Tichilesti, leur ôtant toute existence officielle, les arrachant à leur vie familiale et sociale.

Après un premier séjour à leur côté en 1999, je suis de retour en 2016 parmi eux et  je constate qu'avancées scientifiques et avancées sociales n'ont pas eu le même cheminement ...

Les 14 derniers résidents sont intimement attachés à ce village qu'ils ont érigé et aucun ne se résout à abandonner cette zone blanche.

In the 1950s, the Romanian authorities announced that leprosy, this “divine punishment” had been eradicated in Romania.

In actual fact, all the lepers had been sent in secrecy to Tichilesti and stripped of their official existence, tearing them from their families and social circles.

Officially recognised in the 1990s, but admitted nowhere, fourteen villagers remain in this white zone, this territory of the forgotten, the “Zona de Alb”.

I didn’t feel unwell but my mother would not allow me to get a job. I could no longer show myself due to the bruising on my face. ...Then they told the other young people to avoid me.

Sometimes people ask me how old I am and I reply, that i know how long I’ve lived, but don’t know how much time I have left. »
